Parents who lose a baby within the first 24 weeks of pregnancy can now receive a certificate to formally recognize their loss.

The certificates are part of a new scheme and are not compulsory.

While the certificates will be official, they are not considered legal documents.

The certificates will be available to either parent living in England at the time of the loss, for any miscarriage or pre-24 week baby loss since September 2018. The eligibility criteria are expected to expand in the future.

Campaigners have argued that babies stillborn before 24 weeks have been overlooked, leaving some parents feeling ignored.

The government's aim with these certificates is to acknowledge the profound impact of losing a child early in pregnancy.

The NHS defines miscarriage as the loss of a pregnancy during the first 23 weeks.
