Disney is investing $1.5 billion into Epic Games, following their collaboration, the company behind Fortnite. This is the biggest move Disney has made in the video game world. CEO Bob Iger talked about this on February 7th.
Disney wants to make a new “games and entertainment universe” by blending its storytelling with Fortnite. They want people to be able to play, watch, create, and shop for stuff both online and offline.
Iger thinks this will get more young people interested in Disney because they love playing video games. He stated, “This fresh universe created by Disney and Epic offers us a great chance not just to reach more consumers but also to help more people connect with Disney’s famous brands and franchises like Marvel, Star Wars, and many others.”
Disney plans for people to play games Disney makes, make their own games, interact with others, and watch short videos. They might even use this platform to share some of their content.
“Disney was one of the first companies to believe in the potential of bringing their worlds together with ours in Fortnite, and they use Unreal Engine across their portfolio.”
Tim Sweeney, Epic Game’s founder and CEO
Disney and Epic Games have been working together for a while. They’ve done things like adding Fortnite content based on Disney characters and hosting big events, like Marvel Nexus War with Galactus, which drew millions of players.
Disney stopped making its own video games in 2016, but it still makes money by letting other companies use its characters. Their mobile games have been downloaded over 1.5 billion times globally. Some of their games, like Marvel’s Spider-Man, have made over $1 billion in sales.

This investment is also interesting because of Disney’s relationship with Apple. Disney has worked closely with Apple for years. On the other hand, Epic Games has had problems with Apple. They even went to court over issues with the App Store.
Overall, this investment shows how Disney is getting more involved in the world of video games through Epic Games and Fortnite.
