Minister of Food and Consumer Affairs Piyush Goyal has initiated the availability of subsidized rice in packs of 5 and 10 kilograms, stating that the government is striving to ensure that daily food essentials are accessible to the general public at affordable rates.
Bharat Rice launched at price 29 rupees where to buy
The government launched Bharat Rice at a subsidized rate of Rs. 29 per kilogram on Tuesday, aiming to provide relief to consumers after a 15% increase in grain prices in recent days.
Goyal emphasized that the government’s efforts have helped reduce the prices of tomatoes and onions swiftly. Under the Bharat brand, rice will be sold at a retail price of Rs. 29 per kilogram to provide relief to the middle class and the poor. Each kilogram of Bharat Rice will contain 5% broken grains. Goyal also mentioned that the introduction of Bharat Atta (flour) has maintained stability in wheat prices over the past six months.
The government has partnered with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to make rice available through the open market sale scheme (OMSS) at uniform rates to wholesalers, as the wholesale offtake has not yielded positive results. The government hopes to receive a good response for Bharat Rice similar to Bharat Atta.

Despite export bans and bumper production in 2023-24, retail rice prices have not yet stabilized. The government has urged its stocks to be disclosed to prevent hoarding by retail sellers, wholesalers, processors, and large retail chains.
The launch program for Bharat Rice was attended by State Ministers for Consumer Affairs Sadhvi Niranjana Jyoti and Ashwini Choubey, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary for Consumer Affairs Rohit Kumar Singh, and other officials including CMD Ashok Ke Meena of the Food Corporation of India (FCI).
