The Central Government has announced the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honor, for former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh and PV Narasimha Rao. Scientist MS Swaminathan has also been announced for the Bharat Ratna. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced this on ‘X’. Prime Minister Modi, tweeting one after another, announced the honor for all three personalities.
This year, the names of five personalities have been announced for the highest civilian honor. Before today’s three names, former Chief Minister of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur, and former Deputy Prime Minister of the country, Lal Krishna Advani, have also been announced for this honor.

So far, 53 people have been honored:
Since its inception about 68 years ago, 53 personalities have been honored with this highest honor. It was first given in 1954 to India’s first Governor-General Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, scientist Chandrashekhar Venkatraman, and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Sixth personality in ten years to be honored:
In the nearly 10-year tenure of the Modi government, 10 personalities have been awarded the highest honor so far, including this year’s announcement of five names. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya were awarded this highest honor in the first term of the Modi government in 2015, before the late Pranab Mukherjee, Bhupen Hazarika, and Nanaji Deshmukh.
