England & Wales local elections round up

On 1 May 2008, Britain’s Labour Party received their worst losses in local government elections in England and Wales in 40 years, losing 331 seats. They also lost the Greater London Authority election. It was a severe embarrassment and setback for Prime Minister Gordon Brown, being his first electoral test since he came to office. If the current mood of the nation persists, his party will certainly be out at the next general elections.

India’s meek stance on China / Tibet

Nothing in recent times has made me cringe as much as the Government of India’s suppression of pro-Tibet protests in Delhi and elsewhere in India. It was an act symptomatic of an ever weaker and submissive stance towards China.

Tibet neighbours India, and after the invasion of Tibet by China in 1951 a large number of Tibetans have settled in India. Many are now Indian citizens who have great love for India, their land of refuge.

Tibet: A challenge to the world’s conscience

The protests against China’s Olympic torch ceremonies, that have taken place in many countries, have served to focus international attention once again on the Tibet problem.

While Tibet arouses the conscience of people across the world, it was unfortunate to observe that no governments joined their citizens in registering protest against the Chinese government’s treatment of Tibetans, and in some cases actually apologized to China for their citizens’ behaviour.

First ever Hindu tutor appointed at Eton College

Dilip Lakhani, founder and director of the Vivekananda Centre UK, has been appointed as the first Hindu tutor at Eton College.

Eton College was founded in 1440, and is the most famous secondary school in Britain, if not the world. It has produced eighteen British Prime Ministers, and is often described as “the chief nurse of England’s statesmen.”

After Shambo controversy, now its the case of Gangotri

After the much publicised case of Shambo the bull, another bovine controversy has erupted between sections of the Hindu community versus the establishment.

A large number of Hindus protested outside Parliament earlier this month, to express anger and dismay at the killing of a cow by the RSPCA at the well known Bhaktivedanta Manor temple premises in Watford, belonging to the Hare Krishna movement.

26-year old Hindu man jailed for murder in the Midlands

Shilesh Patel, a 26-year old university graduate from Wellingborough, was jailed for life after being found guilty of the murder of David Haynes (21). The verdict was announced at Northampton Crown Court on 18th February 2008. He will serve a minimum of 18 years.

Fanatical Shiv Sena breakaway group attacks Amitabh Bachchan’s home in Mumbai

Horrible ethnic violence was witnessed earlier this month in Mumbai, as activists of theMaharashtra Navnirman Sena, a Marathi supremacist group led by Raj Thackeray (right), went terrorizing migrants to Mumbai from other parts of India, particularly from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, resulting in at least one death and many injuries. The miscreants also vandalized Amitabh Bachchan’s home.
