A family pilgrimage… to Wales!
I was a kid when my family went on a pilgrimage to all the holy sites across India. It was mainly for my grandfather…he had never been able to go on a pilgrimage, and he seemed quite happy that his son was now taking him. I don’t remember much of it though…I was too young.
The other week some extended family came over and they wanted to visit a Kali temple. Now we were told (incorrectly) that there are no Kali temples in London, the closest and in fact the only one in the UK was in Wales. Wales…gosh that far… the only thing I can think of when I think of Wales is Catherine Jenkins and sheep …

A great read, I am certainly very motivated to shake myself out of my laziness and finally go to this temple instead of just planning to; though probably I’ll avoid that fifteen seater!
However, IMO you let yourself down a bit regarding the finding things to be ‘cool’ references. I would hope seeing the devotion of those who help keep the temple going is a lasting and positive experience and you’d want to go back many times with your family present and in future generations to show your support as a UK hindu; i.e. rather than jack it in when the bhajans seem ‘uncool’

Thank you for this piece, which I read early this morning and found very informative. I went to Skanda Vale in the eighties, and it looks like its undergone a great transformation.
I have to say that the humour in the article was fantastic, and very effective in getting my daughter up, to face another day at her job placement. She’s wasn’t keen on going in today but after I read the piece to her (I fancy myself as a bit of a broadcaster !) she happily got out of bed and ventured off to work !
