Confronting issues of violence in the Hindu community
The recent sentencing of a 26-year old man from Hindu background for murder, in an incident arising out of a seemingly trivial incident at a nightclub was greeted by surprise by many Hindus.
“Violence? Hindus? No way!†Or so some people would like to believe. “All Hindu youngsters go to university and get good white collar jobs, and act as pillars of the community†Frankly, this is a self-delusional fantasy of many Hindu community leaders, which fails to grasp the complex and diverse experiences and problems of young Hindus growing up here.

A well thought out, very positive article. Thanks especially for honestly sharing those personal experiences. If one actually looks around objectively at what is actually going on, I don’t think it’s that difficult to see that the myth of Hindu passivity is a blatant falsehood.
The unfortunate thing that concerns me is that a substantial element of Hindu society seems to be encouraging those violent inclinations - viz Hindu fanaticism, whose increase is gradually burying that old smokescreen of Hindu fundamentalism being an oxymoron.
Great to see the Armed Forces being mentioned as a potential positive conduit for otherwise potentially quite negative emotions. The Armed Forces offer a great deal to young Hindus - and I firmly believe that most young Hindus can potentially offer something intensely valuable to the Armed Forces.

Wow.. Hindus.. not - violent.. we continue to believe in that foolishness, especially when we do not take domestic violence into account.. there are so many who have murdered and beaten those whom they loved.. good for Hindu Voice to open this discussion so we could have these things dealt with rather than hidden

It is an age old question whether “Are we (Hindus) the most law abiding citizens of UK?
According to the latest figure available from Home Office which gives complete breakdown according to ethnic and religious affiliation, yes we are the most law abiding community, having less prisoners than even Jewish or Buddhist community.
The breakdown is as follows:
Religion Population Prisoners Male Female % of the
Total population
Muslims 1:5 million 8010 7820 190 0:5341
Hindus 700,000 370 360 20 0:0528
Sikhs 350,000 560 540 20 0:1600
Jews 320,000 200 190 10 0:0625
Buddhist - 1330 1280 50 -
Many people I spoke to find even this low figure too high.
They would like to see it below 100 which would be difficult but not impossible to achieve.
Tamils who are Hindus on most part and come from a war torn country are included in this figure.
There are various reasons why we are the most law abiding people and that include higher education, comparatively stable family background and high employment amongst the Hindu community.

Hindus are the most law abiding citizens in england, in this incident in the article it was anger and just one stab wound that ended up killing the guy their’s always stabbings but alot of them arn’t meant to kill ppl their just to hurt someone in the heat of the moment, and your going to get incidents were ppl are going to lose their tempers and you going to get that within every community but to think we have a problem or to try acting like we have a problem iis just funny. But alot of hindus want to say hindus can be bad boys to get over the good boy image but their’s nothiing wrong with being good law abiding citizens all it does is bring hindus respect from the locals

last thing hindus want to earn is a reputation like the pakistanis or bangledeshis or caribean so why talk about something that isn’t even a issue in the hindu community 97% of hindus are extremely law abiding.

Hindus are law abiding no doubt, but it is quite possible that a Hindu in the UK out of self defence can attack someone and possibly kill him because of the increasing risk of being a Hindu or brown skinned person in the UK.
When we walk on the streets, we receive abuses in most English/Wales/Irish cities, Scotland is the only exception. We receive attacks or in the case of women sexual attacks from the Afro-Carribeans regularly. We can be attacked by workmen at our home. If we have grocer shops or petrol pumps we will be robbed by the Afro-Carribeans or white labour class thugs. The British police will do absolute nothing, but instead if we complain will put the blame on us. Indian lawyers are blood suckers, they will only cheat us but will not help. Thus, I know many Hindus boys and girls carry knife( as it is not allowedto carry guns in the UK) just for self defence as there is none in the UK who would help us. Thus, it is quite possible for them to kill their attackers/abusers. This is not a crime as such, but a realistic response to a country where the authority will not protect us.

I think this is a a good website as it bring to people attention on what happens in the real world. I am a victim on domestic violent and have been separated for more than 3 years now but my past doesnt not leave me at all even though my ex is in a different country. He still holds all my belongings and is demanding for a leeter for apology and jewellaries from me. besides he hasnt given me my own personal belongings that my family gave it to me when i got married. I think the world needs to know how other hindu families are in this 21st century and how they treat others.
this website is an eye opening to others and i think its the best way to convey messages to all

Sonnu: There are many voluntary organizations that would help you. One such organization is Black Sisters of Southall. I understans they are very good, know all the laws, as they have
helped thousands in similar situation.
Your GP and local advise centers like Sangam, CAB and many more can help, so can your MP.
Don’t give up, be persistant and you will succeed.
Good luck.

as a Hindu youth I have seen what we are like and what the “official” statistics say about us…we are a community like any other, we have the good and the bad people, but what is the meaning of bad?? Threatening somebody to cancel a show that is anti-Hindu and then getting locked up for it??
April 12th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Thanks for those statistics Bhupendra. It shows that the Hindu community is certainly one of the most law abiding.

Sonu, Bhupendra has given you good advise. Other two org. I would mention are Mukti Bahini and Chinmayanand Centre.
If you are officially divorced then one solicitor’s letter to your ex. would fix him. You should also be able to get maintenence costs and prevention of harassment order on him. Citizen Advice Bureau has a printout on the subject, you can walk into their office for a copy. So do not be affraid and remain strong. Good luck.
