Most Hindus living in the West have an urge at one point in their lives to learn about Hinduism. Sometimes the curiosity arises from a genuine desire for guidance in life. In other cases the urge to look into Hinduism comes from a particular incident – for example being asked questions that we’re not able to answer. There may be any number of different starting points to an individual’s quest.

P Waytha Moorthy is a Malaysian Hindu lawyer, and founder of the Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF), an organization of lawyers which defends the civil rights of the Hindu minority in Malaysia, which is an Islamic country. HINDRAF has been in the news extensively over the past month, due to a huge rally which they organized in late November, which was banned by the Malaysian authorities. Subsequently Moorthy was arrested twice, and left Malaysia with the aim of raising international awareness to the problems facing Malaysian Hindus.
He is currently in Britain, and Hindu Voice UK arranged for an interview with him to gain a first hand account of what has been going on in Malaysia.

The reason for me writing this article stems back to an incident which occurred a few months ago. A group of friends were using a room in my house to do some filming, and one of their younger cousins was there with them. Afterwards everybody got into a discussion about religion, and one of the comments which most people agreed on was that Hinduism is not a religion in the usual sense of the word, but a path to discover your dharma. However my friend’s cousin, who was a few years younger, commented “You keep talking about dharma, but what is dharma?” This was his first and only comment in the whole discussion.
Earlier this month, a Hindu became the richest man in the world for the first time in modern history. Mukesh Ambani, whose fortune was estimated at $20.1 billion at the beginning of the year, has prospered immensely in 2007 due to an excellent run in the Indian stock market, which saw the benchmark Sensex gain more than 4,000 points to break new records.
Being a major shareholder in Reliance Industries, one of India’s largest companies, as well as the rupee gaining considerably on the dollar has propelled Mukesh Ambani’s fortune to approximately $63.2 Billion by the year end, ahead of Bill Gates’ $56 million.
During a recent trip to India I was looking for books for teaching young children about Hinduism. I came across a series of books, attractively illustrated, quite unlike anything I’d seen in Britain. These were made my a company called ‘Dreamland Publications’, and included books on important aspects of Hinduism, such as the Gita, Mahabharata, Ramayana and about the popular Deities. For this review I shall refer to their book on the Bhagavad Gita, which spanned some 79 pages.

Om Shanti Om is the first major reincarnation themed film that has adorned Indian cinema for a long while (the last one of note was Karan Arjun). The storyline is cheesy and at times slow, but the film has the right amount of humor, romance, glitz and an overall positive feeling for a decent entertainment experience.
Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal. What a dumb name for a movie about British football! This was the foremost thought on my mind with regards to this film, which I shall simply refer to as ‘Goal’ for the remainder of the review.
Goal is a Bollywood film about football. Based in Britain, it places particular emphasis on racial discrimination against Asians in competitive football, as well as attempting to portray the ghetto-like parallel society of many Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis living here.
After Lord of the Rings, the new fantasy film to be released by New Line Cinema is The Golden Compass and they are very keen to let people know that.
Based on the book Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman, the film has some intriguing elements. The story takes place within a realm where one’s soul or “demons” as they are called, are not integrated, residing within people but walk besides them in the form of animal spirits. And the general basis of the film revolves around the something called “dust”, the mystical substance from which everything evolved and the knowledge
