Hindi TV Serials – The Housewives’ Ruin
Over two hundred studies and over 2,500 books and articles have been published so far which examine the effects of violence in entertainment media on human behaviour. It has been blamed for causing psychological damage to children and leading to a rise in violent youth culture. But there are other forms of media related influence on human behaviour that are hardly ever mentioned or discussed. Take the example of Hindi TV serials, which actually tend to affect our mothers and aunties rather than children and youth.

As a guy who has seen much conflict between the females of his family since he was born, I have to say that the soaps do reflect issues in our society. But, as always, the entertainment industry multiplies and exaggerates them by a hundred.
Although I agree these soaps do perpetuate negative stereotypes and paranoia amongst women.

I occasionally watch these serials and totally agree that women are very negative stereotypes shown in them. These serials also have managed to wipe out the social friendly chats friends and families used to have before. A very healthy discussion amongst friengs and families sitting together has almost been wiped out.Even though some of the issues in the soaps are true they have by far been multiplied too much to enhance compulsive viewing.
Most children find them utterly rubbish .What next? Not all women are bad so may be some do gooders should be shown.

I couldn’t agree more with the article- these serials are a serious threat to the fabric of our culture and society- not only is there a general acceptance and acknowledgment by people on timings to phone and visit each other (around serial times) but the main topic of conversation is inevitably the story line in the serials.
I also totally agree about the influence these serials are having on our traditional Hindu values and customs of respect for our elders etc- these are being eroded to the point where there is just anger and poison in people’s minds- and yes unfortunately the current storyline in ‘Kyun Ki Saas…’ is being acted out in our house and mum is being gradually thrown out by guess who, and also guess who is sitting there and watching it all happen….
For Gods sake-someone take control or let us all plan a mass boycott!

I agree that the way women act are very negative - shouting, always conspiring, total disregard for other persons - are not a normal Indian family. Also unrealisically big mansons and flashy cars etc. are totally unrealistic of a majority of Indian families. Also the mannerisms of some men are totally unrealistic of a common Indian - the way they dress, their habits, their interaction, lack of respect to others etc.
I blame the writers / producers of these series - and we need to make them understand the negative effect their writings are having. The number of occassions of negative acts and duration of such acts are giving a bad name to the traditional Indian heritage and culture and family values. We need to expose their names and characters. Secondly, we should not support actors / actoresses that agree to play out the negative roles - vote against them in any votings etc. and write widely to film media to show our dissatisfactions.
Then, the question arises - What motivates actors to play such obvious negative roles, when they themselves are Indians?? I think money must be motivating to act so silly and negatively over and over again. STAR and STAR Plus are financed by Westerners - Murdoch family I think. They appear to be bent on damaging Indian culture through this medium using Indians to do the dirty work for them.
Western culture have a lot to learn from Indian way of family life and there is a lot of respect for Indians in US and UK etc. but Indian actors are doing the damage to their own way of life for greed of earning from western payouts.
Indian actors wake up - and be proud to be of Indian culture and importantly do not act to damage Indian values - reject and refuse to take part in such roles - you will then be respected by viewers. India has a lot to offer to the world - do not damage it, or you will soon be on the scrapheap.

Shanti I fully agree with you. ‘We will say anything, dress and dance anyway for money’ seems to be the motto of Bollywood actors and actresses. It makes one wonder, do Indians have to behave, dress and sing that way just to survive? Or is it just plain mental bankruptcy.
My observation is it is the English language that is killing Indian culture, values and philosophy of life. Also cocaine barons from Mid-East, Pakistan and Afghanistan investing money in the production of these rubbish Hindi films, insisting on more and more use of Urdu is destroying true India at its core. It makes me question the calibre and standards of the moderators. And only one word comes to mind, ‘CORRUPTION’!!!

The whole sale Americanisation culminated and showed its ugly face in the stadium in Bangalore yesterday. Almost naked ‘cheer girls’ I am sure the potbellied producers will take cue from it and try to make money by giving roles to those girls who am sure do not know who their parents are. ‘You may have ten fathers but only one mother to come to this world’, philosophy. This is Christianity. Soon we will have some idiots, male or female, jumping over the stumps in the middle of cricket match, as it happens I am told in Britain.
As no Chief Minister will show guts (having taken bribes for the events) to instantly deport such people and the cheerleaders only solution is do not buy tickets for the match and hit the pockets of the organisers. In India time has come to show the world what Indian culture is.
