Is the term “Bollywood” demeaning?

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Bollywood, as you will all be well aware, is the informal name given to the popular Mumbai based Hindi-language film industry in India. It is a comical combination of Bombay (the fomer name of Mumbai city) and Hollywood. The term is often incorrectly used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema. Bollywood is only a part of the Indian film industry.

To me, the word has always sounded awfully tacky, and because it is so blatantly ripped of ‘Hollywood’, it automatically gives a sense of a film industry which lacks originality and confidence. It is hard for a film industry to be seen as anything more than a comical bunch of wannabes when its very name is ripped off so unashamedly

A Hindu inmate’s prison diary

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

I doubt many of you have served or been remanded and enjoyed the hospitality of Her Majesty’s Prison Services. Spiritual well-being is important to me and I was glad to find out there was a Hindu Service once a week.

I started of in HMP Pentonville, which is a holding prison for all categories of prisoners to be detained until they have been allocated another prison (hopefully) after they have been risk assessed. It is a tough place to say the least, especially for someone like me who was there for driving offences and was forced to live with murderers and violent criminals

The son of former dictator and mass murderer Idi Amin was recently imprisoned in the UK for manslaughter, due to his participation in armed assault in the London Borough of Camden last year.

The case, which received zero publicity until now due to a court order (now lifted) banning reporting on the case, will come as shocking news to the many thousands of Hindus who came to Britain due to Idi Amin’s forced exodus from Uganda.

The Gita and the Freedom of India

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

On August 15th 60 years ago, an ancient civilisation accounting for over 1/6th of the world’s population, achieved freedom. Despite the sad events that accompanied India’s Independence, the partition of India and the accompanying massacres, Independence Day is a happy event, celebrated by over a billion people every year, in many parts of the world.

A sacred song recited thousands of years ago to a hesitant hero who had lost his courage and will to fight also provided inspiration to thousands of those who struggled for India’s Independence. That song - the Bhagavad Gita…

Violence & video games: The good, the bad and the ugly

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

A lot of people play video games nowadays. And the most controversial topic relating to these is of course the high level of violence they usually contain.

Taking a game like Grand Theft Auto, the concerns seem to be justified. The game involves players killing innocent onlookers, meeting prostitutes and joy riding. Ok so you have the choice if you want to or not. But the fact the game allows you to do so and even rewards you kinda gives out a dangerous message. Although I’ll admit that if you go on a shooting spree you’ll pretty much end up in jail or in hospital. But hey all you have to do is pay a bribe, give up your weapons and you’ll be back on the streets of GTA to do it all over again.
