Shameless American NRI tries to patent yoga!
Swami Ramdev goes head to head with a non-resident Indian in the US for securing patent of Yoga. An NRI, Vikram Chaudhary, reportedly applied for the patent of Yoga with the US administration. Ramdev believes that Yoga and Pranayam cannot be patented as it is an ancient school of Hindu philosophy, which prescribes physical and mental disciplines for attaining oneness with the Supreme Being.

Dear Fellow mates- OM namashiva ya,
Only a few word I want to say-
In ancient time there is no border, now we have, in ancient time there is no restriction following GOD (enhancing of our internal power), now we call it religion. Under Hinduism its “always the way of life” The time we start patenting “Yoga” We have restricted our self to “GOD’.
OM & YOGA is as old as the Universe it cannot be patent, if you do so you have patent the teaching of Hinduism, Buddhism ,Christianity, Muslim Sikhism, Sufism and others .Please NRI, Vikram Chaudhary be vise….Your life span is only 100years,how about the next…..

Finally, an enlightened being speaks up and speaks the truth, essesntal planks from the Vedic tradition! For too long too many . not just NRI’s , but Indian nationals have been prepared to discard and denigrate our rich spiritual tradition of Yoga and don robes of different stripes while thinking that they are promoting the tradition. Unfortunately the colonial mentality persists in many of our folks who continue to seek validation from others, when in effect they have long abandoned their own precious gift bestowed upoin them by their rich heritage.
We must not only chastize those, NRI’s among them, who distort Yoga, but equally have to challenge the craze which sweeps across India under the banner of Yoga! Yoga like every other tradition must cointinue to evolve. To think otherwise is not to grasp nature and history. However, what we must oppose is the constant plucking away of the Yoga Culture by those hardly qualified to be its ambassadors. Unfortunately I wittness as many on this side of the ocean as I do in India.
My Namsate and Salutation to Baba Ramdexv Ji.

Yoga is a way of life and I don’t think it can be patented. Those who are trying to get patent on Yoga, don’t actually understand or know Yoga.
Trying to get patents on Yoga simply reveals materialist hunger for money, name and fame. Something a Yogi will never admit.
If they are trying to patent Yoga then it is impossible, they can only patent a posture or routine. Yoga itself is a part of nature and no one can get patents on air, water, animals, plants and other forms of nature.
It is good that Indian Government is trying compile all information available on Yoga. Baba Ramdev has done a herculean task in waking India’s faith in Yoga for everyone. He has successed in helping a common man to regain health and vitality with Yoga. Today most of the people who have access to TV and Cable Network watch him everyday and most of them have already realized the benefits of Yoga.
Those who are trying to get Yoga patent need to learn Yoga from a ‘yogya Guru’ as I feel either they haven’t learned Yoga completely or it has failed to work on them, else they must have at least learnt five ‘Yamas’ of ‘Astang Yoga’.

I have known of Vikram Chaudhari since 1973. He teaches Yoga in L.A. California. I have also heard of his efforts to copy wright his methodology. I am not sure of the legal issues but I am sure that his style of doing yoga could be considered his, not the postures but the way it is being taught or being practiced.I am a bit surprized by the reaction of my fellow readers. To my knowledge there are other brand names like Iyanger yoga, Integral Hatha yoga, Kundalini Yoga all representing their flavor of Hatha Yoga. Every studio owner claims to have his /her own style. I guess that is what is known as marketting. I am surprized at the judgemental stuff about meat eaters teaching yoga being the end of the world or something. One realy beautyful aspect of Sanatan Dharma is that it has no central authority and it is always evolving. Those who are really motivated to influence others point of view could debate the point, that was how the sages settled their differences not by calling names. Om

There are people in the world who are selfish and could mis-use of the resorces avilable in India. I think Indian Governmet all all NGOs should fight aginst such move to patent yoga.
Please support Ramdev Swami in this good cause.
I request Hindu Voice to start getting signature on apitition and send it to respective authority in America to stop suvh move.
I hope mr. Chaudhry would not play with feelings of many HIndus.

There is a beautiful statement in “Hitopadesha” (words of wisdom), which made distinction between human beings and animals, and says that man’s legitimate claim to superiority over the animals would be valid only if he conforms to dharma. The english meaning of the Sanskrit verse reads:
“Consumption of food, sleep, fear, and enjoyment of sex are common to man and animal. But, ‘Dharma’ is a special attribute of man. Bereft of ‘dharma’, man is equal to anima1.”
Therefore, everyone should conform to dharma (right conduct). Otherwise he is no better than an animals. Shri Chaudhary, if he is really a Yogi, must look inside (his Atman), and not outside materialistic (money, fame, patents) cover. He must remember, when he leaves this world, can’t carry along any amount money, fame and patents. A soul becomes immortal, who leaves the footprint of dharma. May Ishwar (God) give him sat-buddhi.
Yoga is Eternal philosophy, no one can patent or own it. Bhagavan Sri Krishna is Yogeshwara (Lord of the Yoga). AUM Tat Sat!

For your information, I put this newspaper report here.
India to translate yoga hymns to stop patents in other nations
New Delhi, June 06, 2007: Preparing the defences against those raiding its indigenous wealth, India will translate ancient Sanskrit hymns describing yoga postures in 5 foreign languages to stop countries from handing out patents for things already known for centuries.
The Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (Ayush) has engaged top institutes such as Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga and Kewal Dham of Pune to translate Sanskrit hymns describing yogic asanas (postures) in English, French and German among other languages.
The move is aimed at preventing grant of patents by other countries to the likes of Indian-origin Bikram Choudhury, who applied to patent yoga practised in a steam room.
The United States patent and trademarks office is understood to have granted over 150 yoga-related copyrights, besides hundreds of trademarks for yoga accessories.
“Traditional Knowledge Resource Classification (TKRC) software, being used for translation, will also include video footage demonstrating yoga postures,” official sources said.
In the first phase, to be completed by December this year, work on 150 asanas will be completed. The plan is to cover 1,500 most commonly used kriyas and asanas.
Work on digital library of other traditional systems of medicines like Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha has been completed. Over 1,20,000 medicinal formulations have been digitised.
“Discussions are on with patent offices of EU, us and Japan on modalities for sharing this library on traditional knowledge,” a government official said.
Once these patent offices have been given the database, they would not grant any patent on anything already documented as traditional knowledge.
Taking a strong view of grant of patents to yoga asanas in the US, the government has already asked its mission in Washington to take up the matter with American authorities.
Department of Ayush in Health Ministry has written to Department of Industrial and Policy Promotion under Commerce Ministry on the issue, which has, in turn, brought the matter to the notice of the Indian mission in Washington to be taken up with the US trade representative.
India has in the past won similar patent-related cases in the US on turmeric and neem.

Sad gurave namah:
it is extremily shame that hearing a person registered for YOGA, the ancient Bharat heritage!
any style of yoga cannot be patent, it is the gift of our great rishis. yoga emerged from Lord siva (sivam), and maharshi patanjali made surtas for it. there are many types of yoga like laya, tantra, kundalini so on… all of these yogas are not just for health, but it is spiritual, it is for entire human, not for a single person. the government of india shoul take nessery action to prevent such kinds of evil action. Bharat heritage and its ancient practice for the human not for any single person or any country. not country or person can claim its patent. all real Hindus and who likes humanity should awake against these type of evils.
