Guru tells a rags-to-riches story about a young Gujarati entrepreneur, Gurukant Desai (Abishek Bachan) who sets out to get rich and create a successful business for himself at a time when India has just become independent. The story is said to be inspired by the life and times of that late industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani, who came from a humble background to become one of India’s wealthiest industrialists. At the film’s beginning, Gurukant is working for a British company in Turkey. He was promoted to a low level managerial position, and was frequently told that he was a good worker who could go quite far in the company, if only he’d dress correctly and learn proper the proper etiquette. At this point, Gurukant thought to himself, “These guys can’t tell me how to dress! Hell, if I’m good, why should I earn money for these ‘gora’, instead I’ll go into business myself.”
