Chanakya: The famous master of statescraft in ancient India

Monday, November 20th, 2006

Chanakya, also known as “Kautilya”, who is believed to have lived in the 4th century BCE, is a towering figure in Hindu history. His name is synonymous with shrewdness, success, politics and empire building. He was the mind behind the formation of the Mauryan Empire. It is universally acknowledged that the success of Chandragupta Maurya, a boy from humble origins, in founding the Maurya Empire “was due as much to his own military genius, as to the statesmanship of his Prime Minister Kautilya” (R. C Majumdar, Ancient India).

Niraj Thaker

A collection of experiences brings a person to realisations, some profound some simple yet those can take seconds, minutes, months or years. I have come across many young Hindus who have felt like this at some point in their life. In my innocence, I thought that joining some or other large Hindu organisation would be a good idea. Over the next two years I attempted to work with many Hindu organisations in Britain, as well as some local temple committees. God knows how I persevered so long!

Interview: Damyanti Ladwa

Monday, November 20th, 2006

Damyanti Ladwa has lived in a small town called Amesbury, a few minutes walk away from the famous Stonehenge, and together with her family are the only Hindus living in the town. She is an inspiring example about how a person can stand firm in their roots despite having no other Hindus living in the area in which she lives. Even more impressive is the way that she has reached out and engaged with the wider community to educate and inform them about Hindu culture.
