Just wondering how you came to the conclusion that Dalip Singh is a Hindu? His name, his occupation before wrestling and the fact that he is married to a lady called Harminder Kaur would imply to me that he is from a Sikh family.
You really are struggling to find role models for your youth.

There are more Singhs in India than there are Sikhs - the name was around long before the Sikhs and there are millions in Harayana, Himachal Prdesh, Bihar, UP etc who bear the surname Singh
the same applies to the name Kaur by the way- used by the Rajputs hundreds of years ago
and how did you imply that the background makes him a Sikh
in any event he is a known follower of Ashutosh Maharaj - a Hindu

There are more Hindus (50-60million) with Singh as a surname than Sikhs. Dalip is from Himachal Pradesh - often invokes Goddess Kali during his fights, and is a follower of Ashutosh Maharaj.
As far as him marrying a girl called Kaur - what difference does that make? My friend Praveen Shah (a Gujarati Hindu) married a Sikh girl. Does that make him any less a Hindu? Urm, I think not.

Mandip read before you post nonsense, Dalip is from Himachal Pradesh (the most Hindu state % wise in India) and millions more Hindus use the surname Singh than Sikhs, infact we Hindus have been using it long before any of your Gurus were even born, Kaur was also used by Hindus before Sikhs adopted it.
Dalip Singh is a Hindu Rajput from Himachal Pradesh, born in the village of Dhirana. His personal Guru is Ashutosh Maharaj.

yes wwe is staged but the company admit theyre more in the entertainment business than a fuly fledged ’sport’. So it should be seen as such.
Also he’s not exactly the best of wrestlers either, but big up to him he’s certainly made an impact…and it was fun watching him on tv.

Hi, big fan of Dalip Singh Rana, as far as I can tell he is Sikh by birth, there are many Sikhs who are practising Hindus, it comes down to ones internal belief, but still im a big fan. plus guy is Dalip Singh Rana lol he got the Rana and Singh part and Dalip meaning King; it is derived from Dal Team/Force/Soldier; as I am Dalbir this means The brave team/force/soldier, hero;.

I have met Mr. Dalip Singh in a gym in Jullundher. He is huge! Beyond Imagination. You really gotta see him live to understand the giangantic size!
What is this discussion about this origins! Its on every thread I have been to…anyway let us be happy and say only he is an INDIAN.
But for the record I’d like to tell you, he is a Hindu (Rajpoot). Lotsa hindu’s have the ‘Singh’ last name. If you need proof of that, come live in North India for a month. And I wouldn’t have started on this origin thing if I hadn’t seen some stupid in the beginning of this thread saying - “he is married to Harminder Kaur” as a reason for his being a Sikh. and umm.. yes he is himachali…. but lived much of his life in punjab so he is also a punjabi… … anyway lets not continue with this charades….
and lets not belittle anyone else’s religion.
however there is this particular thing abt my religion - Hinduism - that i particularly like -
its….wen u go to a temple… the only requirement is that u go in bare feet…..after that every individual may pray and do as he wishes. We (Hindu and Hinduism) recognize and respect the fact that spiritualism and religion is a personal experience and allow ppl to explore their own ways to meditate and reach out to god by giving them freedom even in a temple.
i have been to a church a couple of times…they seem to permit freedom…but it is, sometimes i feel, too enclosed and with little area for physical movement. and i think (personally, to me) that also leaves little room for my thots and all
been to a mosque… a long time ago so i cant remember…..but hmm.. i guess i’ll go one of these days,.,,
and regularly go to guru-dwara, well u gotta follow some rules there, but its good with gr8 chanting music and many sholks (if u ever hear carefully u will find the mention of saint. kabir lotsa times in them)…
not that rules make it worse or better BUT i still think that Hinduism realizes the importance of INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE which is quite a wise and noble trait for a religion.

i personally don’t know if Dalip Singh Rana is a sikh or hindu but i know every sikh has the middle name singh and many sikhs have the last name rana but sikh or hindu he’s also a punjabi and being a punjabi myself i still think he’s representing us and india and india needs to start producing athletes rather then have the world laugh at us.

i think their bin more wrestlers then dalip singh their was tiger ajit singh who is like a god in japan and his son who wasn’t that big and many wrestlers in amature wrestling and during my visit to canada last year their was this khalsa wrestling and weight lifting school which has produced weightlifters and wrestlers who have and will represent canada the weightlifting school blew everyone away getting like 4 gold medals at their nationals.

hindu or sikh he is indian and we should be proud of that, hindus and sikhs are both dharmic brothers and sisters, both religions are indian, we should not fight each other, in uk sikhs and hindus are united, the muslims outnumber us in uk and try to convert sikhs and hindu girls, brave sikh and hindus have fought with these muslims on many occasions and will continue you to do so, muslims in uk tell indian girls that indians are losers and slaves of mughals so lets unites as indians and send out a message to muslims that we are indian and proud and we not stand by and see our culture, religions and women be violated we are descended from the same sikhs and hindus who defeated mughal rule in north and south india.

Plus considering dalip is used by many sikhs as a first name, singh is used by all the sikhs as a middle name and i thought hindus who used the name singh used it as a last name and not as a middle name but i guess from this site and thread they do and rana is a last name for many sikhs and considering he’s called the punjabi phenom you can understand why many sikhs think dalip singh rana is a sikh, but since he’s got a guru or whatever he could of bin born into a sikh family then just stopped following sikhism. But alot of sikhs know singh is a last name for many hindus but never heard of a hindu with the middle name singh like the sikhs have.

I do worry somewhat that people here are “dividing” Sikhism and Hinduism, and I cant understand why that should be so.
Sikhism, like Buddhism are both great independent faiths in their own rights and nobody sets out imply otherwise however, I think it is important to say that Hinduism incorporates to a large degree and embraces the teachings, philosophies and preachings of Sikhism whereby Hindus will pray at Gurudwaras, and Sikhs will pray at Ram, Krishna and Maata’s temples.
That is just so right .. and I despair when people try to divide the two.
The Hindus and the Sikhs have always exchanged our sons and daughters with each other in holy matrimony with parental concent .. and I so wish that people would see that side of the beauty of our two faiths, intertwined and yet autonomous at the same time.
As someone has pointed out here, we are Indians together, and that is the most important thing to remember.
Let us not portray ourselves as divided, when in reality there is no real division anyway except in the minds of a limited few.
Some of my best friends are Sikhs. I go to Gurudwaras with them, and they come to the Temple with me .. and we all fully partake, as families, in all ceremonies of prayer and Prashad.
I wonder if all here would agree that it is that beauty of the Sangam of our two faiths which we should be celebrating together, and not the negatives?
Whether the Great Kali is a Hindu or a Sikh, he is one of ours.

sikh first off he ain’t Punjabi, he was born in Himachal and later on he joined Punjab police.
next singh is used as middle name by enuf Hindus, ever heard of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhairon_Singh_Shekhawat), he is Rajput and Hindu and uses Singh as his middle name.
Or how about Zorawar Singh Kahluria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Zorawar_Singh) one more Rajput and Hindu who used Singh as middle name, so get rid of the misconception that only sikhs use singh as middle name.

selvanayagan veerasingham actually many parts of himichal pardesh use to be part of the punjab and in himichal and haryana their our ppl that consider themselves punjabi, i have relatives in haryana who have bin their before haryana and punjab became two seperate states taht consider themselves punjabi including the ppl from their village, and dalip singh rana also seems to be one of them who considers himself punjabi
as well guys like mandip mistake him for a sikh
1.dalip a first name used by many sikhs
2.singh a middle name used by all sikhs
3.rana a last name used by many sikhs
4. punjabi phenom
these four points is why ppl mistake him for a sikh
Plus sikhs do have far more successfull athletes then rest of india combined, punjab has over 60% of india’s medals and most them won before the 80’s when militancy kicked in throwing punjab off from the athletic world and only now punjab is begining to get back on its feet again.

That’s rite, used to be part of Punjab, they are not anymore and are not Punjabi from the viewpoint of language, many people in Haryana speak Haryanvi and different dialects in Himachal, unless you really stretch the meaning of Punjabi these languages are not what you would consider as Punjabi, they share many similarities just like standard Hindi and Punjabi but that don’t mean they are the same.
And I don’t know what you mean when you say Punjab has 60% of India’s medals, if you mean national level competitions then most of the medals go to North Eastern states like Assam and Manipur. If you mean at the Olympics, most of India’s medals came from Hockey which is a team sport and the medal’s don’t belong to any single state, Punjabis did dominate the Hockey team and still do, but some of the most successful players have been non Punjabis like Dhyan Chand and Dhanraj Pillai in modern times.
Next Indian hockey as it stands today is nothing to be proud of and has gone down the toilet for a while now, hell they couldn’t even qualify for the Olympics this year.

HE IS A FOLLWER OF THE HINDU GURU ASHUTOSH MAHARAJ.HE IS A DEVOTEE OF THE HINDU GODDESS MAHAKALI WHOM HE OFTEN INVOKES DURING HIS WRESTLING BOUTS. HE IS A RAJPUT FROM HIMACHAL PRADESH AND I CAN BET MY LIFE THAT THERE IS NOT A SIKH ALIVE IN THE WORLD THAT CAN EVEN DREAM OF DEFEATING THIS HINDU STRONGMAN, IF ANY SIKH IN THE WORLD WISHES TO TAKE HIM ON, I SUGGEST THAT THE S.G.P.C SIKH BODY SHOULD ARRANGE A FIGHT. We the Hindu community challenge the Sikh community to produce a biger musleman than our Dalip Singh Rana. For all you ignorant sikhs out there, the suffix “Singh” was attributed to the Rajputs and your Guru Gobind singh copied this honorific suffix for his newly formed Khalsa.

I cannot believe how many people are going around seperating Hindus from Sikhs. Why has this blog suddenly become a religious debating ground?
We are both the same, be it Hindu or Sikh. Hindus willingly gave their first born sons to Sikhism as mentioned in many article from history. This clearly show our respect for the Gurus and their teachings.
Many Rajput family, from which I come from did this and now have members of their families following the Sikh faith from birth through marriage and finally to death.
I have read a number of articles on the web including extracts from the Guru Granth Sahib and the Bichitra Natak, which clearly prove that Hinduism and Sikhism follow the same path and complement each other.
If we are to seperate, how would I split my family, - My father-in-law is Hindu and my Mother-in-law a Sikh. Therefore my wife and children have both Hindu and Sikh blood flowing through their veins.
Can someone answer this for me?
The seperation between the 2 faiths was started by the British during the British Raj, they wanted to divide and conquer! Let us now reunite again.
I went to India last year and visited the Hindu Temple Naina Devi and the Harmandar and numerous other local Temples and Gurdwaras.
(PS Rana is a Rajput name, but he can be either a Sikh or Hindu and my great great great grandfather name ended in Singh)

My cultural back ground is Hindu but I am not religious because religion is actually just culture and god is a superstition. So stop arguing like idiots over a concept like a personal god which has no real world evidence. Sikhs unfortunately are as extreme as muslims in their blind beliefs. When are we going to realize that religion is just culture? Indians are confused because we have a lot of imported cultures like islam and christianity. There are more than 2000 religions in this world and they are all just cultures, and over 1 lac gods that various cultures believe in are all superstition. We are all fighting over concepts created by early people when they were trying to make sense of the world when the earth was flat. When scientific discovery was at its infancy. Thank goodness for the scientific progress mankind has made and get rid of this religious nonsense.

You should study some of the philosphical aspects of the religion you were born into. You would be amazed to learn that it is quite different to what one would think by just observing the externals of the religion. It is an inward search for the essence of who we are and for what exists beyond the material/physical. To dismiss the search for the supra-physical as pointless may satisfy you, but much of humanity has deeper urges and are not satisfied not knowing or not seeking.
