Maharana Pratap (1540-1597) is one of the great Hindu heroes of medieval India. His valour is still sung in a thousand songs throughout the land, especially his own region of Mewar (in Rajasthan). His life is associated with many legends and heroic tales. The present volume is a short sized (110 pages) historical biography on this famous King. It was initially written in the 1940’s, and was recently republished with a new preface by K. C. Yadav, to fill the need of a short and accurate biography of Maharana Pratap.

It’s not often that a program dedicated solely to Hinduism is shown on terrestrial television. So when a program called: ‘The Beginner’s Guide To Hinduism’ was broadcast on Channel 4 recently it certainly was something for Hindus and those interested in Hindu affairs to take notice of. Along with Islam and scientology, Hinduism was the other ideology chosen as part of a Channel4 mini series where ‘celebrities’ explore a particular belief. The ‘celebrity’ that presented the program was former EastEnders star Paul Nicholls (who used to play Joe Wicks).

A survey has found that Indians and other South-Asians living in Britain are more willing to fight for the country compared with the national average. And Hindus were the most willing candidates.According to the survey, 43 percent of Asians said that they were willing to join the British armed forces, compared with 37 percent for the general non-Asian population.

Hindus were the most willing at 56 percent, followed by 51 percent of Sikhs, while 34pc of Muslims say they would take up arms in defence of Britain, said the poll.

Hindus in Britain have expressed serious concern over news that a radical Islamic preacher who called for the mass murder of Hindus, Jews and Westerners is to be released from jail within weeks, after serving just over a third of his original sentence.The Jamaican-born Sheikh Abdullah el-Faisal was sentenced in 2003 for nine years, convicted of inciting racial hatred and soliciting the murder of ‘infidels’. The sentence was later reduced to seven years on appeal.

If you were to open up a typical English language book on Hinduism, usually you’ll find that it revolves around the same things; caste, cows, statues, widow burning, Aryan invasions etc. Such books are often written with a strong cultural and religious bias, and are anything but balanced in their portrayal of Hinduism. Anyone with even a basic understanding of Hinduism would know how erroneous such stereotypes are. The problem is that these books often serve as many people’s introductions to Hinduism, therefore their lopsided portrayal of Hinduism has far reaching ramifications.

The five-day opening ceremony of the largest Hindu Temple in UK took place from the 23rd August 2006. More than 10,000 devotees visited the Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) temple in Tividale (near Birmingham, West Midlands) in the opening week alone. It is designed as a replica of the famous Tirupati-Tirumala temple in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, one of the most revered Hindu shrines in the world. The idea of creating a replica of the Tirupati-Tirumala temple was first conceived over 30 years ago, in 1974, by a small group of Hindus in Birmingham. With steel determination the group overcame many hurdles, including financial problems verging on bankruptcy and stiff local opposition.

On Monday 22nd August, while visiting Havelock Gurudwara in Southall, a group of Sikh men allegedly surrounded Swami Ramdev and hurled abuse at him. Two of them also tried to assault him, but were stopped by Swami Ramdev’s bodyguards and others present at the Gurudwara, and swiftly evicted from the premises.
