Husain art controversy hits London!

A London exhibition of paintings by controversial Indian artist M. F. Hussain was cancelled after unidentified vandals defaced erotic paintings of Durga and Draupadi. The attack caused an estimated £200,000 of damage.

The exhibition, hosted by Asia House, contained some controversial images of Hindu deities, including one painting of Durga in what looks like a sexual act with her lion. Certain Hindu groups in Britain had been campaigning to get some of the paintings removed from the exhibition.

I really can’t believe people choose to ignore our objection in a peaceful way but started to react when we get agrresive. I think it’s ok to get tough with them once in a while.

  2. Shahzaman Says:

Perhaps Husain should depict Ayesha copulating with a camel while the Mohamed (PBUH) looks on approvingly!

  3. Lalita Says:

Those vandals did a good job, they achieved something that even the Hindus in India couldn’t do, and there’s 800 million of them! This should be a wake up call to them.

  4. Bhargav Says:

This isnt the first time MF hussain has done this sort of thing. He has previously produced nude paintings of “mother India”.Why did Asia house support this? I think the protesters had every right to get angry and I approve what they did.

MF Hussain is sick and twisted and needs serious psychological help.

  5. Manish Solanki Says:

Bhargav - actually these paintings that were being shown at the Asia House were produced at least 20 years before the “Mother India” painting of which u r talking.

Anyways - nudity is not itself the problem - at least the way I see it. It is showing of Hindu deities in humilating sexual poses with animals. I think that needs to be emphasised. Because it is not just nudity that are causing the protests (like the hostile media coverage tries to make out).

Vandalism and volience are things which we Hindus should try to avoid. However with this particular incident i rekon us peaceloving Hindus should turn a blind eye. I think a lot of people take the biscuit with us and our tolerant nature. Ask yourselves this question, why doesnt Mr Hussian paints rude pictures of figures from his own religious background???….if he did im sure he’d get more than his pictiures getting defaced. Mr Hussain is abussing the tolerance and relative freedom Hindus have towards art and expression.

At the end of the day no voilence was directed at people so i would say well done to those who defaced Husains paitings. And no Hindu brother or sister should condemn the vandalism.

I’m against the abuse of Hindu images especially when it’s been done in an offensive way and for commercial gain and sensationalism with complete disregard for the feelings of Hindu’s. MF Hussain only sees fit to use Hindu sacred images for sexual poses, which shows his level of mentality. This shows he is a sick pervert who I don’t even wish to address as an artist.

  8. Dharmesh Agravat Says:

Maqbool Fida Hussain is a serpent, very cleverly creating pictures that have a Hindu ethos but at the same time denegrating the Hindu faith, many so called Hindus are not even bothered about it but I well and truly am!

Ask MF hussain to draw a picture of Prophet mohammad having sex with
his wife khatijah who is older than prophet mohammad by 25yrs.Ask MF hussain to draw the picture of prophet mohammad having sex with ayesha
who is very very young.Lets we see the reaction from the muslim world.muslims want to condemn we hindus but when we countermeasure them they get paranoid.

i think we should stop all forms of image worship in a negative way. non hindus or those who do not have respect of eastern beliefs continually abuse our ancient gods and ridicule our heritage.

krishna on shoes, durga on whisky and buddha candles are all very negative ways of using dieties and gods. eastern gods are fashionable but we need to protest against the abuse of our ancient gods and godesses.

eastern beliefs are under threat if we do not challenge such behaivour, why be negative can this artist not of shown her art in some of the wonderful stories that thses beautiful dieites are well known for!!!!!

Further to earlier discussion regarding freedom of expression, particularly in the context of Muslims, for any who have still to see what all the fuss was about over ‘those Danish cartoons’, the full story, as well as all the images in question, are available at:

Note this link is provided for information and as food for discussion only, and does not in any way imply either approval or condemnation on my part.

  12. Pravin Says:

Had a quick look at the link above and what caught my eye in the article was the bemused state of Muslim psyche when they:

“..condemned around the Islamic world, and has led to the burning of embassies and a boycott of Denmark by Muslim nations..”

And yet, they do not condemn the obsene paintings of Hindu gods by the unrepentent Indian born Pakistani painter Hussain.

Is their so called “Islamic world” the only world whose feelings get hurt by others, and is never the case in reverse?

Why stop at simply just a boycott of Denmark by Muslim?

I mean, why not take the Muslim protest to its ultimate climax whereby all Muslims living in Denmark pack their bags in disgust at Denmark, and leave that country in protest to go live in their Islamic world?

Surely that would earn the Muslim world a lot more respect, dont you think?

But hey, I do talk absolute nonsense at times don’t I, or is it just poor humour? LOL

MF Hussain is a Rascal. Both his hands need to be chopped. And people who support the Rascal in the name of Artistic freedom need to be thrashed. This Rascal needs to be hounded. I am looking for a PATRIOT like Udham Singh who would get hold of the Rascal wherever he is hiding and chop off his hands. Mind you, one must not kill him. Hindus must form a Trust to collect money and reward any one who chops off the hands of the Rascal. Being a retired soldier I shall willingly donate my one month’s pension for the cause. When in Uniform, I fought for my Country. Now, it is my Dharma to stand up & fight for my DHARAM. Let no one take the Hindus for granted. Jai Hind
