Protest to the Asia House Gallery’s exhibition of MF Husain’s offensive paintings
Wednesday, May 17th, 2006The following is a press release from Hindu Human Rights, dated 15/05/06:
It has come to our attention that the Asia House Gallery in London is currently hosting an exhibition by the controversial Indian artist Maqbool Fida Husain. Husain has become infamous over the years for his offensive erotic paintings of Hindu Gods and Goddesses in sexual poses which have caused outrage to Hindus around the world. We also find it extremely distasteful that Asia House Gallery have used Husain’s explicit images of Goddess Durga (who many Hindus regard as their Mother) in their flyer to advertise the exhibition which includes this and other offensive images…
An injury besieged Sachin Tendulkar has turned towards spirituality to help him overcome his ailments. The master blaster had to miss out the recent seven-game one-day series between India and England, and is going to sit out of the West Indies one-day series too.
The odds were always stacked against me ever knowing anything about my culture. Growing up, I was never sure what it meant to be a Hindu. I grew up in a quiet town where my family ran (surprise, surprise) a newsagent shop. There weren’t any other Hindus my age in the area. In fact I never really got a chance to mix with any non-white people until I went to a university in London at the age of 18.
At one point in the Ramayana, Indrajit (Ravana’s eldest son) launched a massive attack against a section of Rama’s army, causing massive slaughter. When Jambhavan (the commander) arrived at the scene to survey the damage, the first thing he said was, “Is Hanuman alive?”
It was this month many years ago that a young penniless man with barely a possession in the world sailed out to the West, armed only with his knowledge and the desire that Hinduism should be known and respected throughout the world. He was the first Hindu in the modern age to travel to the West and give the message of Hinduism to an international audience. He became the most famous Indian of his era and in his short lifetime planted the seeds of a new era of global spirituality. Yoga practitioners around the world celebrate his first journey to the West as the birth of the international yoga movement.
35 Hindus were killed in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir in separate incidents over the Mayday weekend. The attacks came days before the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was set to meet separatist leaders in Kashmir for talks.
